At Asa, your home will complement (and perhaps inspire) your personal commitment to sustainability.
From our very walkable, cyclable, and street car-rideable location in the Pearl District, to our use of locally made materials and goods, to outdoor gardens and green roofs, Asa’s green features have earned it a soon-to-be-awarded LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
What does it mean to you? A healthier, safer, and more comfortable home. And that’s just the start. Read on…
Better Indoor Air Quality
- Breathe easier (and reduce the noise) with high efficiency heating and air conditioning systems that limit allergens and reduce utility costs up to 40 percent.
- Low volatile organic compounds (VOC) carpets, paints, and sealants improve overall air quality.
- Asa is a smoke free building.
More Natural and Efficient Lighting
- Floor-to-ceiling windows are energy-efficient and flood each flat with natural light that enhances health and productivity.
- Most light fixtures use florescent bulbs instead of conventional incandescent bulbs, providing more adaptive light while reducing energy costs.
Responsible Use of Materials and Resources
- 95 percent of all construction waste material was recycled, adding to the innovative spirit of Asa’s design.
- Of the total manufactured materials, 65 percent was manufactured locally/regionally and 45 percent was harvested locally. Using local materials helps to sustain the local economy and to preserve Portland’s culture.
- Hardwood floors are made from wood certified by the FSC.
- 23 percent of materials in the building are made from recycled content.
Relaxing Urban Green Space
- Our Eco-roof (green roof) is planted with native species that contribute to the natural habitat, reduce stormwater runoff, and improve stormwater quality.
- Expand your home outdoors with a personal planting garden, landscaped gardens, peaceful sitting areas and views from our Sky Lounge terrace.
Efficient Water Use
- Using ENERGY STAR appliances, dual flush toilets, and water-efficient showerheads, Asa reduces water usage by an estimated 42 percent. This cuts your utility cost and saves our environmental resources.
- Rain barrels will help capture water runoff and be used to supply water to the fourth floor terrace, making efficient use of natural resources and helping sustain ecosystems.
Lots of Transportation Choices
- The Portland Streetcar is steps from your door, making traveling downtown and beyond a breeze.
- With a neighborhood of galleries, shops, parks, restaurants, and more just a stone’s throw away, walking is healthy and convenient.
- Abundant bicycle parking within building makes cycling an even easier vehicle-free way to get around town.
- Got an alternative fuel vehicle? You’ve got a front row spot in the parking garage.
Sustainable Ideas to Help You Live Greener
- Keep a walk-off matt at your door to reduce dirt and allergens from entering your home.
- Find new ways to commute to work to reduce congestion and greenhouse gas emissions.
- Turn your electronics all the way off, including your computer. Standby modes often use almost as much energy as when the item is on.
- Wash only full loads of laundry and use cold water.
-
Nontoxic glass and neutral cleaners are great for a healthy home and are available at Asa’s management office. You can also try a natural cleaner like Peppermint Floor Cleaner:
- ¼ cup liquid soap
- 1 cup white vinegar or lemon juice
- 1 cup very strong peppermint tea
Combine in a bucket of warm water and mix until sudsy.
